How To Declutter and Organise Your Wardrobe or Closet
10:50
I FINALLY DID IT! I cleared out the mess that I entitle my wardrobe! It wasn't fun, it wasn't easy, and I definitely was a sweaty mess by the end of it, but I feel as though at least one thing in my life is now sorted. Hopefully, I can make this process a lot easier for you as well with my tips and tricks on how to re-organise your wardrobe!
For me, there is two steps into decluttering your closet: The 3 Categories and The Final Organise.
The 3 Categories:
Before you decide anything you need to split your wardrobe into 3 categories, the I Always Wear section, the I Haven't Worn in 6 Months section and the I Haven't Worn in 6 Months But I'm Waiting To Look Good In It section. THIS is going to make it a lot easier.
The I Always Wear section is pretty self explanatory. Anything that you wear regularly and you still like the style of, keep!
The I Haven't Worn in 6 Months section is the trickiest for me. This is for the items that you don't wear and will never wear again. Including sentimental items. I am someone who likes to keep the most ridiculous pieces because they hold the tiniest glimpse of a memory. Did I really need those Topshop shorts from three years ago that never fitted properly but where a bargain at 50p from the carboot?! No, I didn't. This was getting an issue so I enforced the rule of only allowing myself to keep three sentimental items. If there are more that you just can't let go of, they can be placed in storage, but in your actual wardrobe CUT THIS DOWN. I can guarantee that these pieces will take up at least 50% of the clothes that you always question yourself if you should keep.
Finally the I Haven't Worn In 6 Months But I'm Waiting To Look Good In It part. In my head I sometimes try and kid myself that some of those 'precious memories' clothing fall into this category until I admit that I can't wear that top that i somewhat pulled off at 15. There are going to be items you've bought that you know for certain don't look great now but maybe one day if you become confident in yourself or change your appearance, you are going to look killer. I don't have many of these, namely a few tops and a pair of shorts here and there but it's good to look over what you already have for the future.
The Final Organise:
Now you've decided what to keep and what it's time to say bye to, it's time for my favourite part, organising shit!!! I personally find it therapeutic and fun but this part might be tedious for others. Anything that you are getting rid of should be sorted into piles of what you want to sell and what you want to donate to charity. Collectively as a family we give a load to charity shops in our area around once a month. I am selling some pieces on my depop though so go check that out (link below).
After everything has been sorted I think it's so important to finish it off by putting your closet into some sort of order. This is what I personally do and works best for me:
Jumpers; Cardigans; Shirts; Flannels/Checked Shirts; Tops; Dresses; Skirts; Shorts; Jeans; Jackets&Coats
This sits best on my clothes rack and looks the most aesthetically pleasing.
I hope this was somewhat helpful into any future wardrobe clear out if it's part of your annual spring clean or just when you get bored like I do.
